Hurricane Melissa is forecast to strengthen into a uncommon Category 5 cyclone as it turns in the direction of the Caribbean island, bringing dangerous flash flooding and mudslides.

This weather system, which recorded winds of up to 195 km/h as of 0600 Greenwich Mean Time, is now shifting north-west in the Caribbean Sea and is anticipated to make landfall by midweek, based on data from meteorological authorities.

Advisories of electricity outages and structural damage have been issued as Melissa produces up to thirty inches of rainfall and storm surges as high as 13ft above typical tides. "Find safe refuge immediately," locals have been advised.

This hurricane is the 13th hurricane in this year's Atlantic hurricane season, which typically ends in late autumn.

A highest-level cyclone is the most powerful category, with wind speeds of at least 157mph.

Alerts are also in effect for regions of Haiti such as the capital, Port au Prince, the neighboring country and eastern Cuba, where the hurricane is projected to bring comparable impacts by the middle portion of the coming week.

Mudslides already being caused by the cyclone have already killed two in Haiti, according to local authorities.

The hurricane is projected to pass over Cuba by Wednesday before moving through the Greater Antilles and entering the Atlantic Ocean.
