In a inauguration day in his new role, Zohran Mamdani committed to “reinvent” the metropolis, declaring “a new era” and an ambitious commencement to his term.

A Groundbreaking Leader

The new political star, who just a year ago remained a relatively obscure state assemblyman, is the city's first mayor born in Africa. He also made history by being the first to be sworn in using the Islamic holy text.

“A moment like this comes rarely and rarer still is it that the public whose hands are upon the mechanisms of progress,” Mamdani stated.

Rejecting advice to be modest, the mayor asserted: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to redefine is that of small expectations. Beginning today we will govern boldly and broadly.”

Adhering to Democratic Socialist Ideals

Mamdani explicitly affirmed his socialist politics. “I was elected as a socialist leader and I will lead as one. I will not abandon my ideals for concern of being called radical,” he proclaimed to rapturous applause.

The ceremony was a dual event, starting with a late-night oath-taking in a disused subway station. He was formally sworn in on the front steps of city hall by Vermont independent senator Bernie Sanders, who spoke of Mamdani's election as a victory over powerful interests.

A Sweeping Policy Agenda

Mamdani now faces one of the most challenging jobs in American politics, with a plan promising:

• Subsidized daycare
• Free buses
• A halt to rent increases for approximately 1 million households
• A trial program of city-run grocery stores

The estimated $10 billion expense of these programs may prove difficult to fund. Mamdani has vowed to tax more heavily the city's top earners and corporations. However, as a municipality under the authority of the state government, he will require the legislative support of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Navigating Political Dynamics

The new mayor must contend with skepticism from some members of the Jewish community concerned about his past criticisms regarding Israel. Tensions were revealed during the transition when a senior aide resigned over offensive past social media posts.

Mamdani has moved to smooth over these tensions by convincing Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to remain, preventing the optics of losing a Jewish police chief.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has labeled Mamdani a “socialist” and threatened withholding government money. Despite this, a recent meeting between the two was reportedly unexpectedly cordial.

The Fundamental Tests of Governing

Traditionally, New York mayors are evaluated by their success in providing essential functions: trash collection, curbing the rodent problem, repairing potholes, and making sure reliable transit operation.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams highlighted his administration's anti-crime efforts, citing record low numbers of murders and shootings in 2025, with murders reported.

As his administration starts, Mamdani and his wife will relocate from their Astoria apartment to the stately mayoral residence. The outgoing mayor offered a unusual piece of advice about a supposed friendly ghost in the home, which allegedly only haunts those who do not act to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani ended his remarks with a direct declaration: “The work has only just begun.”
